Google Vids pauses the photo upload for a custom avatar.

On 2 November 2026 Google said people can upload an image to make a custom avatar in Google Vids. On 3 November the same post said that rollout is paused.

On 2 November 2026 the Google Workspace Updates post said people can upload an image to create a custom avatar inside Google Vids, in addition to building one from scratch. On 3 November the same post said the rollout is paused, Rapid and Scheduled Release timelines are TBD, and Google will post an update when it resumes. The post names no reason, no resume date, and no country.

What did the 2 November post announce?

The post is Upload an image to create a custom avatar in Google Vids, dated 2 November 2026, labeled Google Vids and Rapid Release. It says users can now upload images to create custom avatars directly within Google Vids, in addition to building one from scratch, for tighter control from your own image. That sentence links to Google Vids.

Three bullets follow. Upload an image from a local computer, Drive, or Photos. Refine the image within Vids to cleanup backgrounds, lighting, or add festive decorations. Google spells that word cleanup. Save the avatar to the Vids project so it can be reused in the same video. The caption is Upload Avatar user experience.

For admins, this feature does not have an admin control. End users go to Use AI avatars in Google Vids. The resources list also points to Learn about availability of Gemini features in Google Vids. The same post names Business Starter, Standard, and Plus; Enterprise Starter, Standard, and Plus; Education Plus; personal Google accounts; Google AI Pro and Ultra; Enterprise Essentials and Enterprise Essentials Plus; Nonprofits; Individual; Google AI Pro for Education; Teaching and Learning; and AI Expanded Access. A name on that list is not proof the upload is on today.

What does the 3 November line change?

The update sits above the present-tense sentence. It reads: Update: November 3, 2026: Rollout for this feature is paused. We will post an update when it resumes. We have updated the rollout timelines listed below in this post to reflect this change. On 5 November 2026 that update is still on the page. Rollout pace names Rapid and Scheduled Release domains and then prints TBD for both tracks, with the same pause line. The Rapid Release label does not mean Scheduled Release is live.

The sentence that users can now upload is still printed under that update. It is the 2 November announcement, not a later note that the pause ended. The page names no reason, no resume date, and no country. It does not say preset avatars or the scratch builder are paused.

What does the Help page still print?

Use AI avatars in Google Vids does not mention the 3 November pause, and it prints no date for that pause. It still has a section titled Create a custom AI avatar from an image. The steps say Upload image, then Upload, then a high-quality image file from your device. The tip says that for best results you use 16:9 landscape images with a clear, well-lit human face and a neutral background. The post says a local computer, Drive, or Photos. Help says from your device. Neither page says the pause removed Drive or Photos. This article does not pick a source the two pages do not share.

Refine does not match either. The post says cleanup backgrounds, lighting, or festive decorations. Help says click Refine selected and describe your changes or tweaks. Those are not one control. Custom avatars are saved in the Vids project. Help adds that using the avatar in another file means copying the project so the avatar carries over. Neither page says what a paused rollout does to an avatar already saved.

Build from scratch is a separate section. It asks for a preferred gender, age, racial background, and outfit, with an optional logo and optional extra details. The post says the upload sits in addition to building from scratch. It does not say scratch was new on 2 November, and it does not say scratch is paused. Preset avatars remain on the page, each with a look and a built-in voice. On quotas, Help says you can generate a set number of AI avatars each month based on your plan. For many users, this includes up to 25 generations. Other plans may have a shared limit between AI avatars and AI video clips. Each generated avatar video is up to 60 seconds. The monthly limit resets at 12 AM PT on the first day of the month. The 25 is that for-many-users sentence, not every edition. The shared limit of 10 is on the availability page, not in this sentence.

The same page says the feature requires an eligible Google Workspace or Google AI plan, and that it is also available through Google Workspace Experiments. A spoken-script list includes Indonesian. Indonesian there is a language, not a country rollout. Avatars are created through generative AI, are not real people, and use is subject to the Generative AI Prohibited Use Policy.

Which quota table is this not?

Learn about availability of Gemini features in Google Vids prints no date. It does not mention the pause. No row is labeled image upload. A number in the table is not proof the photo upload is on. The default line says up to 25 AI avatar generations a month, and some plans share a limit of 10 generations across AI avatars and AI video clips. That 10 belongs on this page.

The table is not one number. Ten a month: Business Starter, Enterprise Starter, Nonprofits, Education Plus, and Teaching and Learning. Twenty-five a month: Business Standard and Plus, Enterprise Standard and Plus, Essentials, Enterprise Essentials, Enterprise Essentials Plus, and Google AI Pro. Essentials Starter, Education Fundamentals, and Education Standard show no check on the avatar row. Personal Google accounts and Workspace Individual are marked 6 a month, beside the note that personal Google accounts only have access to preset AI avatars. Google AI Plus carries that same 6 and that same note, and the 2 November list does not name Google AI Plus. This page splits Ultra into Ultra 5x at 125 a month and Ultra 20x at 500. The post says Ultra and does not print that split. AI Expanded Access and Google AI Pro for Education are 100 a month. Google Workspace Frontline does not include Gemini features in Google Vids.

Several video-clip rows footnote access to personal avatars, a different Help page. This article does not treat that page as the image upload. Plain Essentials lists 500 seconds a month and does not carry that footnote. Enterprise Essentials and Enterprise Essentials Plus do. For work or school accounts, this page says the admin controls access to Google Vids and can turn off generative AI features. If the account lacks a feature, the option will not display. The 2 November post says this feature does not have an admin control. Those are different sentences. A missing upload control can fit the paused rollout, or an account that lacks the feature. The pages do not say which one an operator is seeing.

What should an operator check?

Read the 3 November update before treating users can now upload as the control on the account today. Both release tracks are TBD. The resume line is a future post, not a date. A missing Upload image control is not a country holdback.

Do not read the Help steps, or a 10 or a 25 in the quota table, as proof the upload is on. Do not read the pause as a shutdown of preset avatars or of the scratch builder. Drive, Photos, and from your device stay an open mismatch. The feature post says no admin control. The availability page says an admin can turn off generative AI in Vids. Indonesian on the spoken-script list is a language, not a rollout for a studio in Jakarta.

This is also not YouTube's temporary feature pause. That hold is a security check on a channel. This one is a rollout pause on an image upload inside Google Vids. The published note is YouTube may pause uploads, lives, and thumbnails while it checks a channel.
